Mission

HOPE SAVES INC. is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization formed exclusively for the purpose of fostering and nurturing hope through education, and empowering young, hopeless and impoverished girls in rural Haiti to make sound choices in order to stave off early pregnancies and lead useful lives. Our aim is to present these girls with a better alternative to what life has given them, to hold to their eyes and within their reach, the possibility of a much better and brighter future of self-respect, dignity and ultimate self-sufficiency. We guide and nurture our candidates every step of the way, and provide them with an open ear throughout their stay in the program and beyond. Our ultimate hope is that they will become "big sisters" to future candidates.

History

IT ALL STARTED WITH GABRIELLE

The idea of HOPE SAVES began in August 2013. It was during that time that the founder, Julien Moliere, lost his father unexpectedly in Haiti. Distraught and depressed, Julien met a twelve year old little girl named Gabrielle. She was very skinny, but with the brightest little eyes.

Gabrielle caught Julien’s attention at once. Through talking to her and other adults in the area, Julien found out about her story: she never knew her father; she lived with her mother and her grandmother in the countryside where the primary means of subsistence are farming and raising animals. With no “man of the house” to farm and raise cattle, they depended on family and friends to help them (Julien met her at the home of a family member who had come from abroad. Parents would send their small children there in the hope of inspiring pity, and therefore receiving little gifts). Julien got to understand the dire situation of the family, to know some of the serious problems affecting young girls like Gabrielle in the area and all over the country, more or less.

Due to extreme poverty, young girls often begin a sexual life at an earlier age than is normal, sometimes in order to help the family. The parents, being poor and not being able to provide for their children, give the blind eyes to what they know too well is happening. These girls, being naive and not being aware of any preventive means, become pregnant soon after puberty. And this in turn perpetrates a vicious cycle of very young girls getting pregnant, creating more kids in poverty in the process; and these young girls will later repeat the cycle.

With this newly found knowledge and understanding, HOPE SAVES began as an informal, self funding project by Julien Moliere, aiming to help Gabrielle have a better and brighter future.

Julien promised Gabrielle’s mother and grandmother that he would finance Gabrielle's education, help them start a small business so they can have a little cash flowing in and out of their hands on a regular basis, and he would be there if Gabrielle is sick or needs anything. He only asked in return that Gabrielle remains in school, gets good grade, and behaves in a way so people could not use her name badly.

In August 2019, Gabrielle was a vibrant young woman of 18 years old, doing well at school and aspiring to become a nurse.

Julien, through HOPE SAVES, has since extended his support to many other girls, with the same conditions. Amongst the girls are:

Michelle’s mother got pregnant when she was just 16. She lost the little boy she was pregnant with. She later had two girls, Michelle and Sophie. Michelle came to us in August 2017. She is a marvelous A+ student with a sharp mind which we hope to cultivate. In August 2019, we also took in her little sister Sophie, also very smart.

Helene came to us in August 2019. Her mother got pregnant with her and had to drop out of high school to take care of her. At the time of our meeting Helene, it had not rained for nearly two years in her part of the country. As a result, they have not had a harvest for two years. Her parents have very limited means. They live in a hut with a pigeon coop on top.

Helene, her mother and father live in the hut on the left. Seven of her extended family members live in the house in the center.

This is usually a verdant corn or millet field, depending on the time the year, when there is rain. Now it’s just dirt.

HOPE SAVES seeks to become a beacon of hope through education for endangered little girls throughout Haiti. We do not judge the parents of our girls for their plight, instead we look for ways to address each girl’s situation individually. Our long term objective for HOPE SAVES is to continue building and growing the organization and to run it in such a way so that it can continue operating smoothly, independent of its founder.
